Week 2 – A Rights-First Approach to Behaviour
Discover the frameworks and models that underpin PBS, providing a holistic understanding of behaviour and individual needs. Explore the role of Behaviour Support Plans (BSP) and the NDIS, and define behaviours of concern in relation to social validity and goal setting. This week focuses on individualised, person-centred planning when opening a case.
Week 3 – Restrictive Practice
Gain an understanding of restrictive practices within the NDIS framework, including their definitions, ethical considerations, and relevant legislation. Learn to identify restrictive practices, develop fade-out plans, and adopt trauma-informed approaches when managing restraints.
Week 4 – Risk, Safeguarding, and Interim Support
This week covers risk assessment and management, including respecting an individual’s dignity of risk and evaluating the risk attitudes of services and individuals involved. Learn about Interim BSP planning, safeguarding plans, and how to meet NDIS requirements while ensuring safety.
Week 5 – Non-Aversive Response Plans
Focus on strategies to manage and reduce behavioural incidents by preventing escalation. Learn about the Multi-Element Behaviour Support framework, the behavioural escalation cycle, and effective non-aversive and de-escalation strategies.
Week 6 – Data-Driven Functional Behaviour Assessments
Explore the technical side of Functional Behaviour Assessments (FBA), including ABC data and behavioural function analysis. Discover the competing behaviour pathway model to develop targeted interventions that replace challenging behaviours with functionally equivalent alternatives.
Week 7 – Functional Behaviour Assessments: Contextual Analysis and Formulation
Build on Week 6 by examining person-centred approaches to behaviour assessment. This week emphasises the importance of contextual analysis and formulation alongside behavioural data to ensure a well-rounded understanding of behaviour.
Week 8 – PBS Goal Planning and Support Needs
Learn to create meaningful, person-centred goals and identify the support needs required to achieve them. This week focuses on applying PBS principles to goal-setting and planning.
